Grid-Connection Consultant – PV & BESS

Technical guidance and advice for connecting a PV installation and a battery energy storage system to the 10 kV distribution grid, including grid control, communication architecture and coordination between all parties involved.

Project description

For this project, technical support was provided for connecting a solar installation and a battery energy storage system (BESS) to Fluvius's 10 kV distribution grid. The assignment covered both the technical preparation and the alignment between the different interfaces involving the grid operator, the EMS, the battery control system and the site's operational users.

In a first phase, the focus was on the PV installation. The control and communication between the installation and Fluvius was set up via a Phoenix Contact EMS solution. The goal was to correctly regulate the generation capacity according to the grid operator's setpoints, including the required logic around dynamic disconnection and grid limitations.

In a following phase, the connection of the BESS was further developed. This included advice on the hardware setup, the high-voltage switchgear, cabling, power calculations and the disconnection philosophy. The technical challenge lay not only in the physical connection to the grid, but also in the correct communication between all systems and stakeholders involved in the overall energy control.

The BESS is now effectively operational. Thanks to Nick Remouchamps and Coretecs, communication between all parties involved was successfully set up via the Phoenix MINT controller. Specifically, the bridge was made between the Agregio BMS, the Fluvius telecontrol cabinet, Flexcity and the Veolia dashboard. In this way, a stable and usable communication structure was achieved, which is essential for correct control, monitoring and interaction with the grid.

In addition, they also developed the full PQ control scheme for the site and the BESS. This not only completed the connection from a technical point of view, but also properly integrated power quality and control behaviour of the installation into the site's wider electrical infrastructure.
